Miyata Stiffener Plate Mounting Instructions

Hardware required for installation:

1 - stiffener plate
7 - 1" - 1.25" long 1/4" carriage bolts
7 - 1/4" nylon lock nuts (sometimes called "stop nuts")
4-8 - 1/4" flat washers

Tools Required for installation:

Flat screwdriver
7/16" wrench or socket
10 mm wrench or socket (only if you want to use the original Miyata hardware)
Drill with 9/32" drill bit (only for Reeder and GB handles)

1.) Remove the handle, seat post, seat cover, foam, and thin OEM metal plate from the saddle.

2.) Place the stiffener plate on top of the saddle where the OEM plate used to sit.

3.) Locate the four holes in the plastic base used to mount the seat post. Line these four holes up with Holes 1 - 4 in Figure 1.

4.) Place four carriage bolts through Holes 1 - 4. The carriage bolts will pass through the stiffener plate, plastic seat base, and then through the seat post bolt holes.

5.) Thread a nylon lock nut onto each of these bolts. Tighten the nuts.

6.) Follow the appropriate instructions below.

Miyata handle instructions:

1a.) Place 3 carriage bolts through Holes 10,11, and 12.
2a.) Reassemble the saddle foam and cover
3a.) Place the cover under the metal clips and close the clips.
4a.) Place the handle over the three carriage bolts
5a.) Thread one nylon lock nut on each of the carriage bolts and tighten the nuts.

Reeder handle instructions:

Left hand Reeder handle installations will use Holes 6,9, and 12 when viewed from the top. Right hand Reeder handle installations will use Holes 7,8, and 12 when viewed from the top.

Hole 12 is an existing hole through the plastic saddle base. You will have to drill the other two holes through the plastic base. Before drilling these holes, you may want to assemble and tighten a bolt in hole number 12 to make sure the holes will line up. To verify that you are drilling the correct holes, hold your handle underneath the seat and make sure the holes line up as they should. You want the middle tube of the handle to be close to parallel with the seats line of symmetry.

1b.) After you have drilled the appropriate holes, place 3 carriage bolts through the holes.
2b.) Looking at the bottom side of the saddle, place 1 flat washer on each of the carriage bolts.
3b.) Typically, you will place 1 more washer on the rearmost hole (6 or 7).
4b.) Place the handle on the bolts. The circular base of the handle should be level with the plastic base. If it is not, add washers accordingly.
5b.) Once the handle is resting level on the washers, not rocking on the plastic center ridge, thread one nylon lock nut on each carriage bolt.
6b.) Tighten the nuts and replace the saddle foam and cover.

GB Coker handle instructions:

Coker handle installations will use Holes 5, 10, and 11.

Holes 10 and 11 are existing holes in the plastic saddle base. It shouldn't be necessary, but a small amount of filing at Hole Locations 10 and 11 on the plastic base may ease installation.
You will have to drill a hole through the plastic base in the location of hole 5.

1c.) Place 3 carriage bolts through Holes 5,10, and 11.
2c.) Turn the saddle over and put 1-3 flat washers on each of bolts 10 and 11. You need to place enough washers on the bolts to keep the handle from rocking on the center ridge. Later, you can adjust the angle of the handle by varying the number of washers on bolts 5, 10, and 12. If you add more than a few washers, you may need to find some longer carriage bolts. These are inexpensive and available at any hardware store.
3c.) Place the handle on the carriage bolts and thread on the nylon lock nuts.
4c.) Tighten the nuts and replace the saddle foam and cover.
